Alisson’s setback saw Kelleher emerge as Arne Slot’s first-choice goalkeeper for over two months and the Irishman enhanced his reputation during that period, helping Liverpool climb to the top of the Premier League and dominate in the Champions League group phase.Kelleher kept two clean sheets in the Champions League and saved a Kylian Mbappe penalty in a 2-0 victory over reigning champions Real Madrid. The 26-year-old’s superb form even led to suggestions that he should retain his place in the side once Alisson returned from the treatment room but normal service has resumed over the past four months.

It it generally accepted that Kelleher is too good to be sitting on the bench and his future at Anfield also looked uncertain after Liverpool signed Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia last summer.Caoimhin Kelleher impressed for Liverpool earlier in the season (Picture: Getty)As part of the £29m deal, it was agreed that Mamardashvili would remain at the La Liga side this season before moving to Merseyside ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.Premier League veteran Richard Dunne believes it is only a matter of time before Kelleher leaves Liverpool and says he would be a ‘good signing’ for Chelsea.

Goalkeeper has been a problem position for Enzo Maresca this season, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen both making high-profile mistakes for a team that has slipped from second to fifth in the Premier League.Alisson Becker continued to thrive at Anfield (Picture: Getty)Dunne could see Kelleher moving to Stamford Bridge and named Newcastle United as another possible option for the Republic of Ireland international.Speaking to William Hill, Dunne said: ‘If it does work out as people seem to think that he’s now going to be third-choice goalkeeper next season at Liverpool behind Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili there’s no doubt that he will then move on.

‘He’s good enough now to be a No. 1, he’s proven that this season. At the age he’s at, he’s probably feeling ready to play on a regular basis and be the starting keeper for a team that is challenging for trophies.

Enzo Maresca is expected to sign a new goalkeeper (Picture: Getty)‘It’s important that he finds the right club. He’s got a real opportunity to have more success in the rest of his career, if it’s not at Liverpool, and he needs to make sure the club is suitable and matches his own ambitions.‘He’s no longer looked upon as just a young second choice goalkeeper, he’s one of the best keepers in the league, hopefully he finds the best solution.

‘Chelsea need a goalkeeper. Although they’ve probably got four or five on their books, they don’t have one that is consistent. Kelleher is proven and Chelsea would be good for him.

‘Newcastle need a goalkeeper as well. There will be opportunities for him, it’s just about choosing the right one.‘The standard of goalkeeping isn’t as high as it was in previous years.

Kelleher would be a good signing for a lot of Premier League sides.’Kelleher’s Liverpool team-mate Alisson produced an all-time great performance to help the Reds snatch a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.Slot’s side were second best throughout but Alisson kept PSG at bay before Harvey Elliott scored a late Champions League winner at Parc des Princes.
