CHEBU have ended the unbeaten run of Gazelle in the Port Moresby women’s softball B grade division. The Nancy Palin skippered Chebu side finished off 11-9 in the top of the ladder match at Bisini Diamond One on Saturday. It was quite an arm wrestle in the opening inning with both teams proving to be a handful with power batting.

Gazelle came out firing and registering six runs and then Chebu responded with five runs. Fielding wisely, Chebu had the upper hand with the guidance of their pitcher/catcher combination, Palin and Winnie Taulal. The duo, with assistance from fellow fielders, managed to keep Gazelle scoreless in the second inning.

Palin led the team by example especially scoring runs in their three innings of batting. She scored her second run in the second inning and before Gazelle could close in on the remaining batters. Gazelle did manage to extend the lead with three runs scored in the third inning, however, Chebu kept them scoreless in their last turn at bat.

Chebu’s dugout came alive with both players and the coaching staff cheering on as they registered five runs in the last inning to convincingly pull off the two-run victory. For Gazelle, the poor judgement play in fielding saw them struggling to keep up with Chebu. Chebu’s stand-in coach Erica Bob said it was a proud moment for the team to defeat Gazelle.

“I told the players to focus on the game and challenged them (players) that Gazelle is the top team on the competition leader, they have won all their games from round 1 and two. “The girls are very proud of their performance and most of our girls a new to softball but through coaching we motivate them to become good players and believe in themselves to do better in the sport,” said Bob. She said all the players have proven that they can play better.
