ChatGPT just got a memory!ChatGPT’s upgraded memory feature now remembers past chats for more personalized responses.

ChatGPT just became more personal with OpenAI rolling out a new memory feature that lets the chatbot automatically remember details from your past conversations—no reminders needed. Announced by CEO Sam Altman on X, he described it as a “surprisingly great feature” that hints at a future where AI grows and evolves alongside its users. In addition to the saved memories that were there before, it can now reference your past chats to deliver responses that feel noticeably more relevant and useful.

However, users in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein won't receive the update just yet—prompting CEO Sam Altman to jokingly tweet, “Call me, Liechtenstein, let’s work this out!” ALSO SEE: Apple Watch Series 11 Could Get ‘Apple Intelligence’ Boost: All We Know So Far The official OpenAI stated, “Starting today, memory in ChatGPT can now reference all of your past chats to provide more personalized responses, drawing on your preferences and interests to make it even more helpful for writing, getting advice, learning, and beyond.” With the latest update, ChatGPT can now automatically remember details like your name, writing style, preferences, and previous conversation topics—making interactions more natural and personalized.

Unlike earlier versions, you no longer need to manually prompt it to remember; the memory updates now happen on their own, offering a more seamless and context-aware experience. The memory improvements in ChatGPT are rolling out starting today to all Plus and Pro users except in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Team, Enterprise, and Edu users will get access in a few weeks.

You can turn memory off entirely in settings, delete specific memories, or use Temporary Chat mode for sessions that won’t be saved. According to the company, “As always, you’re in control of ChatGPT’s memory. You can opt out of referencing past chats, or memory altogether, at any time in settings.

If you’re already opted out of memory, you’ll be opted out of referencing past chats by default. If you want to change what ChatGPT knows about you, simply ask in chat. If you’d like to have a conversation without using or affecting memory, use temporary chat.

” While a manual memory feature was introduced last year, this new automatic version signals a shift toward smarter, more intuitive AI—mirroring Google’s similar move with its Gemini chatbot, as tech giants race to build personalized, long-term AI assistants.
