ChatGPT just got a whole lot more personal. OpenAI has started rolling out an upgraded memory feature that allows the AI chatbot to automatically remember details from all your past conversations—without needing to be reminded. Announcing the update on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called it a “surprisingly great feature” that points to something bigger: AI that evolves with you over time.
“It points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized,” he wrote. we have greatly improved memory in chatgpt--it can now reference all your past conversations! this is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: ai systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized. — Sam Altman (@sama) April 10, 2025 The feature is now live for ChatGPT Pro users and will roll out to Plus subscribers in the coming weeks.
However, users in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein won’t see the update just yet. “Call me, Liechtenstein, let’s work this out!” Altman joked. With this update, ChatGPT can recall things like your name, writing style, preferences, or past topics you’ve discussed—making future chats feel more fluid and context-aware.
You don’t need to prompt it to remember things anymore; the memory updates happen automatically. For those who aren’t comfortable with the idea of an AI remembering so much, OpenAI has kept things flexible. You can turn memory off completely in settings, delete specific memories, or use Temporary Chat mode for one-off conversations that won’t be saved.
OpenAI had already introduced memory features last year, but they required users to manually tell ChatGPT what to remember. This new version is designed to be more seamless and intuitive. The move follows Google’s rollout of a similar memory feature in its Gemini chatbot back in February, as major AI players continue racing toward more personalised, long-term assistants.
