Charvarius Ward: De'Vondre Campbell did some sucker shit

49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell’s refusal to enter Thursday night’s game against the Rams earned him harsh criticism from several teammates, including cornerback Charvarius Ward. Campbell was a starter all season, but he moved to the second team with Dre Greenlaw making his 2024 debut after being cleared from the torn Achilles he suffered in the Super Bowl. Greenlaw injured his knee during the game and the 49ers turned to Campbell, but Campbell declined to play and left the sideline in the third quarter.

After the game, Ward said Campbell should have made his stance clear before the game and that he doesn’t expect to be sharing a locker room with the linebacker in the final weeks of the season. “He a professional. He been playing for a long time ,” Ward said, via Matt Lively of KPIX.

“If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could have told them that before the game. I feel like that was some sucker shit that he did.

Definitely hurt the team because Dee [Winters] went down. We needed a linebacker and I think [Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles] was banged up, too. For him to do that, that’s some selfish stuff to me, in my opinion.

Probably gonna be cut soon, so, it is what it is with that.” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t say if Campbell will be cut, but it’s hard to imagine a different response to a player who refuses to do the job he’s asked to do on a football team..
