Charly Suarez has been dreaming of becoming a world champion since he turned pro in 2019. Now 36 years old, the goal remained high and the fervor alive and well for the Rio Olympics veteran.

Suarez is facing Mexican slugger Emmanuel Navarrete for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight crown at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California on May 10. “‘Di kolang basta kagatin ‘to, kasi talagang gusto kong kunin ‘to,” said Suarez during Tuesday’s PSA Forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Smart/PLDT, MILO, and the country’s 24/7sports app ArenaPlus. With politician and sports patron Chavit Singson supporting his cause, Suarez stakes his unblemished 18-0 (10 KOs) card against the Mexican foe who boasts a 39-2-1 win-loss-draw record.

Suarez, a former national team pug who was a decorated Southeast Asian Games campaigner and a silver medalist in Asian Games, vowed to take the opportunity to finally nab a world title.

The last time Suarez stepped on the ring was last Sept. 20, where he dropped American Jorge Castaneda down the canvas twice to bag the WBO International super featherweight strap in Glendale Arizona.

Navarrete, meanwhile, is coming from a knockout win over his compatriot Oscar Valdez last December..
