
Australia’s top baby names have been announced — with Oliver showing no sign of slowing down in popularity, taking out the top spot for boys for the 12th year in a row. Research company McCrindle has compiled the national top 10 baby names for boys and girls after analysing the top names from each state and territory in 2024. Oliver has retained the top spot as the most popular name for boys, while Charlotte is now back at number one for the most popular name for girls.

According to McCrindle, 30,818 Gen Alphas have the name Oliver and 24,256 Gen Alphas are named Charlotte in Australia. While there was minimal movement among the top 10 names for boys, in 2024 both Lily and Ava exited list of most popular girl names and were replaced by Sophie and Grace.
In the top 100 names for 2024, McCrindle found a continued trend of nicknames being used as first names. These include Leo (Leonardo), Billy (William), Frankie (Frances) and Lottie (Charlotte). According to a survey of of 1517 Australians in February this year, current and aspiring parents are moving more towards unique choices for first names.
A total of 65 per cent said they would be more likely to choose a unique name than a popular or well-known one (35 per cent). With babies born in 2025 now belonging to Generation Beta, McCrindle said the trending names expected to take off include Millie, Maeve, Remi and Margot for girls and Ezra, Beau, Theo and Roman for boys.
