Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista, Va., will name its baseball field in honor of former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel in a May ceremony, it announced on Tuesday. The ceremony at Manuel’s alma mater will be held May 3.

Charlie Manuel Field will commemorate the school at which the major leaguer was a standout in baseball, basketball, football and track and field. “This is a tremendous honor for Charlie Manuel and for our school community,” Parry McCluer principal Todd Jones said in a press release. “His accomplishments on the baseball field are well known, but his influence on the lives of so many young people, including those here at Parry McCluer, is something we will always cherish.

” Manuel, 81, was born in Northfork, W.Va., but attended Parry McCluer.

He starred there before a six-year career in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers plus a half-decade playing in Japan. Manuel began coaching in 1988 with Cleveland, becoming its manager from 2000-02 before taking over as the Phillies manager in 2005. The Phillies Wall of Famer led the team to the 2008 World Championship and the pennant in 2009.

“We are incredibly grateful for Charlie’s support and are thrilled to honor him in this way,” said Mike Cartolaro, Parry McCluer’s athletic director. “Charlie’s legacy is one of hard work, dedication, and passion. We are proud to have his name forever associated with our field.
