Not long after the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood bid farewell to the beloved coffee shop, Sightsee , a new business took over the 429-square-foot space on the corner of Rose Lane and Line Street. The changes began with a deep maroon-colored door and a newly hung sign above it showing off a rose-colored capital "R," which stands for Roseline . The owners of the new wine bar on the block, Meggie and Quinn Burns, jumped at the chance to transform the space into a bit of a guilty pleasure spot.
After working their day jobs, the pair often finished their days together with a glass of wine on the couch thinking, "Why not create this for other people?" And so, the idea to open a cozy yet snazzy bar for wine-lovers like themselves to drop in for a glass of wine — or maybe the whole bottle — was born. New Italian restaurant with New England roots opens on King Street in Charleston The couple curated a selection of wine, beer and sake with a few key specifications: It must be sourced from local businesses and be sulfate-free. They wanted to ensure their menu allowed customers to enjoy an evening with a glass of wine that wouldn't leave them feeling sluggish the following day.
The menu boasts locally crafted sips from five wine distributers as well as two beer distributers, featuring a "healthy blend of old world and new world" tastes, according to Quinn. "We want (Roseline) to be welcoming, which brings us back to the history of wine," Quinn said. "We want to make wine more approachable and take away some of the pretentiousness.
" The Roseline wine bar captures an intimately moody persona with dimmed lighting in the quaint space, but the vibes are truly dictated by the music filtering throughout the bar. One may walk in on a weeknight and wind down to the groovy sound of "Back On 74" by Jungle, or shake hands with a trendy date night spot as old school rap bumps in the background. Highlights of the menu and personal favorites of the owners include Meggie's choice of Le Preyna , a red wine with a "fruity, funky taste with some spice to it.
" Quinn couldn't choose just one — a glass of wine would have him leaning towards a Châteauneuf du Pape, a red wine from the Southern Rhône Valley of France, or Saeculare Etna Rosso , a "chalky"-tasting wine derived from a volcanic region of Sicily. New Orleans-inspired restaurant brings spicy wings and beignets to the Charleston-area The Burns' also make an effort to offer customers assistance in discovering their personal favorites by gathering a bit of information on preferences and providing small sips to taste-test suggestions. The show of consideration is a theme they felt was shared throughout the charming Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood.
As Meggie and Quinn worked to open their new wine bar, the pair said they were met by a "refreshing perspective of abundance, a community who lifts each other up," rather than an air of competition. And as their predecessor Sightsee Shop once did at the location, Roseline's owners also plan to introduce new community events to "keep Charleston small" — the wine bar's slogan and an ode to the charm of old Charleston. Roseline is located at 125 1/2 Line St.
and welcomes the community from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
