SHUSHAN—Charles “Charlie” D. Wilson, 90, a beloved resident of Shushan, N.Y.
, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2024, at The Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Born on August 1, 1934, in Sunderland, Vt.
, he was the son of James and Emily Wilson. Charlie attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Sunderland, Vt. prior to moving to Washington County where he attended Salem Washington Academy graduating in 1952.
Following his education, Charlie dedicated 17 years to Hollingsworth & Vose before starting his own insulation and painting business, Battenkill Foam & Paint, which he successfully operated until the mid-1990s. In addition, he contributed his time working part-time for Jerome Wright Realty while helping Sylvia run the Olde Tales Café. Charlie was also a past patron of the Cambridge Masonic Lodge, a proud member of the Shriners, and actively participated in the Battenkill Watershed Alliance.
His passions included hunting, fishing, and gardening, pursuits that brought him great joy throughout his life. In 1955, Charlie married his beloved wife, Sylvia (Gray) Wilson, who predeceased him in 2022. Together, they raised a loving family, including three children: Michael (Debra) Wilson of Davenport, Iowa, Amy (David) D’Amours of Belchertown, Mass.
, and Alan (Alesa) Wilson of Salem, N.Y. He cherished his seven grandchildren: Sean Wilson, Emily Madigan, Dan D’Amours, James D’Amours, Katie Perkins, Briana LoFranco, and Nicholas Wilson; and 13 great-grandchildren: Wesley, Lucas, Graham, Lillian, Charlotte, Joseph, James, Hunter, Autumn, Cameron, Myles, Gray and Mason.
He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 1 to 3 p.m.
at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home located at 19 East Broadway, Salem, NY. Following the calling hours, a private interment will be held for the family at the Evergreen Cemetery in Salem. Friends are welcome to join the family for a reception following the calling hours at 807 County Route 64, Shushan, NY.
