Conway Fire Department Chief Mike Winter takes his responsibility coordinating and leading the emergency response of the city’s 111 uniformed firefighters seriously. The city’s fire chief since 2014 has served in the department in various roles since 1995, leading the department through a period of significant growth in Conway’s population. That growth is testing the CFD’s capability to provide the first-class service it does on a limited budget, Winter told the Log Cabin Democrat in an interview at Central Fire Station on Thursday.

The CFD has three “very costly needs” that will cost $9 million-$10 million to address, he said. The department’s engines and trucks are aging, radios that are more than 10 years old must be replaced and air packs are due to be replaced within the next three years. Addressing those needs is challenging without a departmental “revenue source,” he said.
