Certificate awarded for topping Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan

Surat: It was a happy moment for residents of Surat on Saturday. Their city was awarded the top position in Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan (SVS) 2024 at an event in Jaipur. The certificate was awarded by Union minister for environment, forest & climate change Bhupendra Yadav and Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma at the event ‘International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies'.

Surat mayor Daxesh Mavani and municipal commissioner Shalini Agarwal received the certificate and the prize of Rs 1.5 crore. They had worked tirelessly with other officials of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to achieve this remarkable feat.



Chief minister Bhupendra Patel has commended the efforts of the SMC and appreciated public awareness for keeping the city clean. He expressed the hope that Surat would serve as an inspiration for other cities in the country. Earlier this year, the city shared the first position as the cleanest city with Indore and now it has achieved a milestone by securing the first position in SVS 2024 .

The city left behind 131 cities while securing the top position. According to the SMC, the city reduced PM10 particles by 12.71% compared to last year.

In SVS 2023, the city was in the 13th position, while Indore was on the top. This year, the city secured 194 points out of 200 for the top position. The SVS had been introduced in 2019.

It evaluates cities on their efforts to enhance air quality and reduce particulate matter. The assessment is done on parameters such as solid waste management, road dust control, construction waste management, vehicular and industrial emissions, awareness programs, and overall air quality improvements, among others..
