A Life Dedicated to Service Dr Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS, Delhi, at the age of 92, served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.
He was known for his leadership during economic crises and his contributions to modernising India’s economy. Before becoming Prime Minister, Dr Singh held various critical roles, including Finance Minister (1991–1996), where he introduced landmark reforms that liberalised the Indian economy, and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. His tenure as Prime Minister is remembered for economic growth, global engagement, and navigating challenges like the global financial crisis.
Final Journey and State Funeral Arrangements Dr Singh’s last rites will take place on December 28 at 11:45 am at Nigambodh Ghat , New Delhi. The MHA stated, "Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister, passed away at 9:51 PM on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS Hospital, New Delhi. It has been decided by the Government that a State funeral will be accorded to Dr Manmohan Singh.
The funeral will take place at 11:45 AM on December 28, 2024, at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi." Before the funeral, Dr Singh’s mortal remains will be kept at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters from 8:30 am for public homage. The procession to the cremation ground will commence at 9:30 am.
The Congress criticised the Centre for the delay in confirming the memorial site, with senior leader Jairam Ramesh remarking that "people are unable to understand why the Centre could not find a location for the memorial." He described this as an insult to Dr Singh, India's first Sikh Prime Minister. In response, the BJP accused the Congress of politicising the matter.
"Congress should recall how they treated former PM Narasimha Rao Ji after his death. The daughter of Shri Pranab Mukherjee also has tweeted how shabbily her father, a former President, was treated by the Congress," read a BJP statement. Dr Singh’s passing marks the end of a remarkable career in public service.
His achievements, including his steady leadership during global financial instability and his efforts to modernise India’s economy, leave an enduring legacy. The proposed memorial seeks to honour his contributions and ensure his memory inspires future generations. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel ).
