A high wind warning has been issued for Central Oregon beginning Tuesday at 4 p.m. The strong winds are expected to last until Wednesday at 10 a.
m., according to the National Weather Service. Sustained winds of 22 to 24 mph are forecast for Bend on Tuesday evening, with gusts reaching 49 mph.
The severe winds are expected to continue on Wednesday. The National Weather Service says downed trees and power lines are likely, leading to power outages. The warning includes Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Madras and Maupin.
Area residents are advised to secure garbage barrels and loose outdoor items. Late afternoon and evening travel should be avoided if possible. The wind will taper off into Wednesday evening but rainy weather is expected throughout the rest of the week.
In addition to the wind advisory, a winter weather advisory for southern and western Deschutes County begins Tuesday at 4 p.m., affecting La Pine, Sisters, Sunriver and Camp Sherman.
This advisory, in effect until 10 p.m. on Wednesday, is for snow accumulations of two to eight inches and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.
High wind advisories and atmospheric river conditions are also in place for much of Western Oregon and Northern California. The National Weather Service in Portland advises travelers to prepare for winter travel and use tripcheck.com before heading over mountain passes.
Jim Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pendleton, said southern and western areas of Bend can expect about half an inch of snow accumulation Tuesday. Another inch could fall overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday. Smith says 2 to 4 inches of snow are forecast for Mount Bachelor on Tuesday night and another 1 to 2 inches on Wednesday.
