The Central Greene School District has a new board member. John Kirsch was unanimously approved to fill a vacancy on the school board during its Monday meeting. Kirsch, who has lived in Waynesburg for the past 23 years, works in research and development for Viatris, a pharmaceutical company in Morgantown, W.

Va. He has two children in the district: a son in 12th grade and a daughter in sixth. “I’m hoping to make a difference in the educational system here in Waynesburg,” he said.

Kirsch was the sole applicant for the position, said Superintendent Matthew Blair. “Mr. Kirsch, I think, is going to bring a lot to the table,” he said.

“He’s got children in the district, so it’s always nice when there’s a vested interest there.” Although he didn’t have any particular changes in mind for the district to make, he said he was looking forward to contributing to progress. “Certainly, Central Greene doesn’t necessarily have some of the benefits that some of the larger schools in the Pittsburgh suburbs have,” he said.

“Hopefully we can make some improvements overall.” Kirsch will fill the remainder of the term of Jay Riggenbach, who was elected in 2021. Blair said Riggenbach had not specified why he resigned, but that, “He’d had some things come up.

” The term runs through the end of the year. Kirsch said he has yet to decide whether to run for a full term..
