A food storage expert has told Express.co.uk the only "requirement" needed to keep celery fresh and crunchy for longer.

Celery’s satisfying crunch is one of its most appealing qualities, whether it’s added to a fresh salad , a comforting soup , or simply enjoyed as a healthy snack. However, keeping that signature crispness intact can be a challenge once you bring it home, and once it starts wilting, it can become rather unappetising. While celery might be easy to overlook when it comes to storage , ensuring it remains fresh and crunchy requires more than just a casual toss in the fridge.

Proper storage plays a crucial role in maintaining the vegetable 's texture and flavour, so Vlatka Lake, a storage expert at Space Station, shared her top tip for preserving its crispy consistency. “Though there are a few different methods for effectively storing celery, they all share one common requirement: refrigeration,” explained the specialist. According to Lake, cool, stable temperatures are essential in locking in moisture, which helps to prevent the celery from “becoming limp and wilted.

” One of the simplest tried-and-tested approaches is to treat your celery like a bouquet of flowers, ensuring it stays nice and hydrated. After wrapping, place the celery in a perforated plastic bag or container, and then pop it into the fridge so you maintain both its flavour and texture while preventing it from wilting prematurely. Explaining the method, Lake said: “One popular method includes wrapping your celery in a damp paper towel.

“Once covered, place it into a perforated plastic bag or container and into the fridge. "This helps to retain moisture which means it stays fresh and tasty for longer.” Lake also recommended a more creative solution: cutting the ends of the celery stalks and placing them upright in a glass cup or jar filled with water.

If you plan to fully submerge the stalks, make sure to use a jar with a lid that can be securely screwed on, and when you refrigerate this set-up, your celery should remain fresh for up to three weeks. While celery can be a notoriously tricky vegetable to store, these simple tips can be a solution for many households who would typically struggle with keeping it fresh..
