OVER 23,000 volunteers are readying the litter pickers and donning the neon hi-vis jackets in preparation to celebrate 10 years of Team Limerick Clean Up (TLC) this week.Ireland’s biggest one-day clean-up marks its 10th anniversary this Good Friday (April 18).TLC aims to foster and build relationships with the community, protect the environment, and instil a sense of civic pride in the people of Limerick.

Speaking ahead of the big day, Mayor of Limerick John Moran said that Limerick City and County Council is“thrilled to once again play a pivotal role supporting this great community initiative”.“I commend the JP McManus Benevolent Fund, Council staff, Mr Binman, and volunteers across the city and county for all they do to make this initiative a cornerstone of community pride and environmental stewardship in Limerick,” Mayor Moran said.“But it is not just about the 18th of April, I encourage everyone to participate and help make Limerick a cleaner, better place for all every day.

”Efforts have already kicked off with Limerick students doing their bit to keep their schools clean and tidy since last week. This year, volunteers are encouraged to invite new neighbours to join them to help foster a sense of pride in their community and care for the local environment. To support this, TLC are providing supplies for tea and coffee gatherings at various locations throughout the city and county.

Príomh Comhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Dan McSweeney, said that “people of all ages wearing hi-vis vests and volunteering to pick up litter in towns and villages across Limerick is a welcome sight each Good Friday”.“TLC10 provides another fantastic opportunity for everyone to come together, meet new neighbours, and make a positive impact on our local environment,” he said.Last year, TLC9 saw an impressive 57 tonnes of litter collected by volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including schools, colleges, sports clubs, Munster Rugby, businesses, charities, nursing homes, and local celebrities.

TLC also launched its ‘Decorate a BIG TLC Christmas Tree’ competition last November, calling on pupils across Limerick to decorate a Christmas tree using recyclable materials. The aim of the competition was to raise awareness of TLC and highlight the importance of protecting the environment amongst younger generations.Over 40 trees from 54 primary schools across Limerick City and County were entered in the inaugural competition.

Prizes included vouchers for school equipment and those taking part got the chance to meet TLC co-founders JP McManus and Helen O’Donnell, as well as Limerick Senior Hurling Manager John Kiely.Team Limerick Clean-Up is a partnership initiative between the JP McManus Benevolent Fund and Limerick City and County Council, supported by Limerick rugby legend Paul O’Connell and official partners Mr Binman, the Limerick Post, Live 95, Limerick Leader, I Love Limerick, and Elive. The post Celebrations galore as Team Limerick Clean Up marks 10th anniversary appeared first on Limerick Post Newspaper.
