Champagne, who has 19 years of coaching experience, had been the Bulldogs’ softball coach and served as Cecilia’s offensive coordinator last season.
The 1999 Cecilia High graduate replaces Dennis Skains, who resigned in March after nine seasons at the school. Skains is now an assistant at East Ascension. Champagne takes over a Bulldogs program that won the Division II nonselect state championship in 2024, finished as the state runner-up in 2023 and in the past nine seasons has an overall record of 71-38 with nine playoff berths.
After resigning, Skains seem to be in favor of someone from his staff being promoted to the head coach position. "They are going to continue to be great here at Cecilia," Skains said in March. "Any one of the guys on the staff can easily become the head coach.
The program is built to sustain success, and the guys that helped to build it where it is are going to continue to be here.".
