CCPA issues notices to Ola, Uber over alleged Android-iOS price differences

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to cab aggregators Ola and Uber for allegedly charging different prices for identical routes based on users' mobile operating systems, Android or iOS. Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced the development on Thursday, stating, "As a follow-up to the earlier observation of apparent differential pricing based on the models of mobiles—iPhones or Android—being used, the Department of Consumer Affairs, through the CCPA, has issued notices to major cab aggregators Ola and Uber, seeking their responses." Last month, Joshi had called for a thorough inquiry into these allegations, describing the practice as a "prima facie unfair trade practice" and a "blatant disregard" for consumer rights. The CCPA’s intervention aims to address grievances and ensure fair trade practices by these companies. Ola and Uber have been asked to clarify their pricing mechanisms and explain the factors influencing fare variations.

This is not the first instance of the CCPA addressing consumer issues involving technology firms. Previously, the authority issued a notice to Apple after users reported performance issues with iPhones following updates to iOS 18. The department investigated these complaints and sought a response from Apple to resolve the concerns.
