Chennai: The CB-CID probe into the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy , which claimed 66 lives last month, is almost done and the agency is awaiting the forensic reports to file its final report, Tamil Nadu govt informed Madras high court on Friday. Making the submissions before the first bench of acting Chief Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice P B Balaji, the state advocate-general, P S Raman, said transferring the probe to CBI at this point would serve no purpose. Opposing the five petitions filed by members of AIADMK, PMK, BJP, and DMDK, seeking a CBI probe, Raman said CB-CID has so far secured 24 accused, of whom k11 have already been detained under the Goondas Act.

Moreover, not a single member from the family of the victims has moved the court seeking a CBI inquiry, he added. “The court should test whether the allegation that the public has lost confidence in the probe conducted by the CB-CID police is politically motivated,” Raman argued. Explaining the details of the probe, A-G said, “In all, 244 witnesses have been examined by the investigation officer.

A total of 17 teams were formed comprising one IO in the rank of DSP and 10 assistant IOs.” The petitioners have claimed in their affidavits that the Kallakurichi MLA had filed a police complaint about the sale of illicit liquor much before the incident. But we could not trace any such complaint, he added.

Recording the submissions, the first bench of acting Chief Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice P B Balaji adjourned the hearing to Sept 4 for further arguments.
