SHREVEPORT, La. - Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) provided an update Sunday following a controlled outage affecting over 30,000 customers in northwest Louisiana Saturday evening. According to Southwest Power Pool (SPP), generation and transmission constraints in SWEPCO's service area prompted emergency action which required a controlled outage.
Multiple businesses in Shreveport and Bossier City were without power and forced to close. SWEPCO and SPP will work to bring additional power generators online Sunday to meet demand. Officials confirmed the power grid is stabilized and being monitored.
SWEPCO said the outage was necessary to prevent long-term outages and widespread damage to the grid. Customers were not given advanced notice since grid operators were directed to act immediately. SWEPCO has not provided specific details about the emergency situation prompting the outage.
Though thunderstorms were prevalent in southeast Oklahoma and northeast Texas before the outage, there were no weather threats locally. KTBS is investigating this situation and will provide more updates Monday..
