A 13-1 regular season record and a trip to the state tennis tournament would be considered a banner year for most teams. But the Dalton High School Lady Catamounts are disappointed.“We were the defending region champions and looked forward to defending that title this year but got upset in the semi-finals,” said Coach Coulter Redding.

“That was a gut punch.”The Lady Catamounts were beaten 3-2 by Cedartown and the Region 7 AAAA title was eventually won by Allatoona. Dalton finished third.

That didn’t sit well with his team, according to Redding. The Lady Catamounts will seek redemption in the state tournament beginning Thursday when they take on Cambridge High School in Milton. The Catamounts will also be in action next week, The Cats finished fourth in Region 7-AAAA and will travel to Atlanta to play traditional power Westminster on Tuesday.

Allatoona also won the boys region tournament. LADY CATSWith a terrific regular season to look back on, Redding is confident the Last Cats will bounce back from their disappointing performance at region. “An hour after that loss to Cedartown, the girls had to go back out on the court to play for third place,” Redding said.

“They took control of that match quickly and did what they had to do. They were resilient, just like they have been all season.”Lady Cat senior Caroline Johnson, who is 15-0 at number one singles this season, also thinks her team will learn from the loss to Cedartown.

“We went in there thinking we would win easily because we had beaten them in the regular season, but Cedartown really brought it,” Johnson said. “It was a disappointment but we know what we have to do to get ready for next week. We know we have to work on our weaknesses.

”Johnson expects a tough challenge from Cambridge. The Lady Bears (12-5) are ranked fourth in the GHSA power rankings for Class AAAA. Dalton (14-1) is ranked sixth.

“We will definitely be playing a good, well-rounded team,” said Johnson. ‘“But I think we’re ready for it. We still have a lot of work to put in but I am very excited.
