Chatham boxer Robert Caswell was in unfamiliar territory as he maintained his winning form on Friday night. The 24-year-old struggled to find an opponent to take him on as Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge hosted a professional boxing event for the first time - and he ended up stepping up several weight classes. Experienced journeyman Fonz Alexander provided the opposition at welterweight, a decent test for Caswell who was fighting at 66lb, putting on some extra weight in the build-up.
The venue was unique, staged on one of the supporter concourses at the west London club, but Caswell won all six of the rounds for a relatively comfortable points win. Caswell said: “ I had such difficult getting an opponent, they kept pulling out and I had to box up at welterweight, which is a bit heavy for me. “They just couldn’t find anyone and the options were mostly welterweights.
Adam my coach was happy to do it and I was walking around at that weight anyway, at about 64-65lb, so I just ate most of the week. “I box at super featherweight, which is 59lb, so it was a bit of the unknown and my opponent was naturally bigger than me. I could feel his strength in there, with his size, but I just boxed to instruction and didn’t get involved too much.
“I think I boxed really well. I had to stay concentrated for the whole fight because even though I was winning every minute of every round going into the last, you never know, you could get hit with a silly shot and it’s all over. I had to stay concentrated and that will stand me in good stead.
“It was a pretty straightforward win, I didn’t get hurt much, I boxed to orders and came out feeling good. “I feel like I am boxing really well at the moment. I am normally quite critical of myself but the last three, since coming back from injury, I have been really pleased with how it’s gone.
I’m boxing as good as I’ve been for a while and it’s good momentum.” The signs are positive that Caswell can fight at Chatham Town this summer but either way he’ll be looking to challenge for a belt, or final eliminator. Another crack at the southern area title is tricky as holder Michael Webber-Kane already has an opponent lined up.
Caswell would have to wait until later in the year for a crack at that, but he could fight for a fringe belt such as a commonwealth silver. He said: “It will be a 10-round fight for a title or a final eliminator, and a nice big fight, it will still be a step up either way.”.
