No more walking with luggage – the bus now stops where it always should have

Rural Somerset just got a little more connected, thanks to a long-awaited bus route finally making tracks to Castle Cary Station. After years of campaign calls and commuter complaints, buses can now pull right up to the platform – no more detours or missed connections. Sarah Dyke, Liberal Democrat MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, has welcomed the introduction of the new direct link, calling it a significant improvement for rural transport infrastructure.

The enhanced connection sees the Route 1 service, operated by , now serve Castle Cary Station directly – a move made possible by the creation of a dedicated bus turning area in the main station car park. Previously, buses were unable to access the station due to space restrictions, leaving passengers with a frustrating disconnect between rail and bus travel. Sarah has long championed better integration between bus and rail services, frequently raising the issue in Parliament and facilitating meetings between , , and local transport providers to improve accessibility across her constituency.

Just last week, she raised the wider impact of transport gaps on young people in Glastonbury and Somerton, highlighting how limited access to buses and trains can hinder employment and education prospects. She cited research showing that a 1% improvement in public transport availability can reduce employment deprivation by an equal margin. Sarah said: “This is fantastic news for residents across Castle Cary and the wider area.

Improved bus links to Castle Cary Station represent exactly the type of joined-up thinking our rural communities need. Reliable public transport is essential for supporting local economies, connecting residents with employment opportunities, education, healthcare, and leisure activities. “I have long advocated for better-integrated bus and rail services, and I’m delighted that collaborative efforts between Somerset Council, Great Western Railway, and South West Coaches have resulted in this positive step forward.

This new service is a clear example of how practical changes can significantly enhance everyday life for rural communities. “I will continue to campaign for further improvements in our local transport network, ensuring communities across Glastonbury and Somerton have the access to opportunity they deserve”..
