The Warbirds, Casper's newest sports team, are set to open their inaugural season at home on Saturday evening. They'll take on Wyoming's only other National Collegiate Development Conference team in the Rock Springs Grizzlies at 7 p.m.

at Casper Ice Arena, with a ceremonial puck drop to be performed by Casper mayor Steve Cathey. Warbirds head coach Jacob Smulevitch has previously said he expects the team to play an exciting, fast-paced brand of hockey that is in part inspired by his childhood favorite team, the Washington Capitals. Tickets for the franchise's inaugural game will be $20 for adults and $12 for kids 12 and under, according to a press release issued by the city.

In recent weeks, Smulevitch has trimmed the roster down from more than 40 training camp invitees to a final 26-man roster that's headlined by team captain Ryan Coots. Coots, a defenseman and North Carolina native, moved to Colorado as a child and played AAA hockey for the Colorado Thunderbirds.

"I'm pumped to get the season started on a good note," Coots said. "The team has been putting in a lot of effort these last couple weeks, and we'd love to have a win [in] our home opener." Tickets are available online at www.
