After being in pain for years, and even limping, a 17-year-old girl from Kenya was given a new lease of life after undergoing a challenging hip replacement surgery at Mumbai's Apollo Spectra Hospital . The teenager has now regained her mobility and independence. She is able to walk in a pain-free manner after four excruciatingly-long years of suffering after a failed surgery in her home country, Kenya.
In India, her case was handled by Dr Safiuddin Nadwi, a joint replacement surgeon at the hospital. A Road Accident That Changed The Patient's Life Four years ago, the teenager was involved in a road traffic accident. The debilitating impact of the injury left her with a bilateral femur screw fixation.
Femur is the longest and strongest bone in the body that helps with movement and balance . Unfortunately for the patient, the surgery resulted in complications, including leg length discrepancy (LLD) and persistent limping. With her leg shortening, an uneven pressure was felt on her hip joint, which aggravated over time.
To add to the existing challenges, the patient also began to gain significant weight, which put an additional stress on her hip. As such, she struggled on a daily basis. Simple everyday activities became a herculean task; the constant pain that she felt severely affected her quality of life.
When they realised that health options in Kenya were limited, the patient's family sought an advanced treatment option here in India. They landed in Mumbai. How The Patient Was Treated According to a statement shared by Apollo Spectra Hospital, where the hip replacement surgery was conducted , the patient was thoroughly evaluated upon arrival and a medical treatment plan was drafted.
"When [the patient] came to us, she was in immense pain and struggled with mobility. The combination of post-surgical complications and her weight gain had accelerated the deterioration of her hip joint. After detailed evaluations, it was clear that hip replacement surgery was the best solution to restore her ability to walk and live pain-free," Dr Nadwi said, as mentioned in the health statement.

According to the doctor, a hip replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged portions of the hip joint with an 'artificial implant' that is designed to 'mimic the natural joint movement'. This procedure is important as it not only alleviates pain, but also restores normal mobility in patients, allowing them to regain independence and resume daily activities. In this particular patient's case, the surgery was critical to eliminate pain and correct the leg-length discrepancy caused by the earlier botched procedure.
