A fundraiser relay, which has seen North Yorkshire Police Federation officers and staff carry a hand-carved truncheon through 34 stages across the county, will finish up in York today (December 4). The 440-mile relay has been organised by Cops 'n Plodders, a group set up following the death by suicide of PC Mick ‘Aky’ Atkinson in 2018, to inspire officers and staff to talk openly about mental health. The relay is also raising money for the Tour de Aky, a charity cycle ride set up in memory of Mr Atkinson.
Participants have faced various weather conditions (including snow) while walking, running, cycling, and even paddleboarding and kayaking their way. PC Jon Wood, one of the relay's organisers, said: "We’ve got so much in this beautiful county and we wanted to get people out in it and do our bit for mental health."
