The operators of a care home in Nelson say they have made “significant progress” following a damning food hygiene inspection earlier this year.

Potens, the company behind Pendle View in Chatham Street, says an improvement plan was swiftly put in place after the initial inspection gave them a one-star food hygiene score on January 17 and that follow-up checks showed clear progress. The January visit by inspectors at Pendle Borough Council uncovered a series of food safety failings that required urgent action. Inspectors found coleslaw in a fridge at 9.4°C—above the legal limit of 8°C - and the issue had also been flagged during a previous inspection in 2021. The report also revealed the home did not have a proper disinfectant cleaner for two-stage cleaning, vital for controlling harmful bacteria such as E.

coli. Inspectors further raised concerns over staff training, noting that employees needed refresher courses in food hygiene and allergen awareness and that supervision needed to be improved. Shortcomings in Pendle View’s food safety management were also noted, including missing parts of the “Safer Food, Better Business” documentation and poor monitoring of food temperatures.

In one case, a cooked burger was recorded at just 58.6°C—far below the 75°C needed to ensure food is safe to eat—with no corrective action taken. The home’s hygiene rating was significantly impacted as a result, though the council carried out an unannounced re-visit on February 6 to assess progress.

"We shared this plan with the inspector, who returned for an unannounced visit on February 6, and expressed satisfaction with the significant progress we had made. "Since the revisit was unrated, we submitted our application for a rated inspection on March 7, and we fully expect to achieve a successful outcome from this inspection.
