On Monday evening, the driver of the SUV was towing a boat onto West Beach but became stuck. Fellow beach users tried to free the vehicle but were unsuccessful and had to leave it there overnight, the tide submerging its wheels. The car remained in the West Bay this morning.
Onlooker Michael MacLeod said: “Some young men in the white vehicle got stuck when pulling their boat out of the water. "Three other cars tried for hours to tow them out but failed. "Even the Coastguard was unable to get them out.
The sand is very soft there. "There were around 50 people watching on the shore. All the benches were packed with people enjoying chips and the sunset entertainment as the boys struggled to shift their car.
"The tide was coming in and they gave up shortly after sunset. "I was surprised to see it still there the next morning. It’s a popular morning swim spot and some swimmers are now concerned about pollution from the vehicle.
” An East Lothian Council spokesperson, said: "We received information on an empty white pickup truck that became submerged by water at West Bay, North Berwick, reportedly following an attempt to tow a boat and getting stuck in the sand. "Coastguard and police are aware and the owner has been identified. No injuries have been reported.
"Council officers are liaising with the owner for its safe removal, taking account of tide patterns.”.
