Motorists have been left confused about the meaning of a simple car button located in all vehicles with many unaware of its important function. Baffled road users took to social media site Reddit puzzled at what the simple switch actually does. The button appears to be the D shape of a car lamp with three lines across a squiggly vertical strip next to it.
The button is located on car dashboards throughout the UK but is a vital lighting switch motorists must use in certain weather conditions. After much deliberation, Reddit users finally stressed the importance of the tool which cannot be ignored. @Blind_Warthog said: “Fog light.
Not for use mist light mist, haze, drizzle, sleet, overcast, wet or perfectly sunny days. Use it in fog. Somehow this is confusing for a lot of drivers.
” @scullyus87 added: “This is one of the tell me questions, so you may be asked on the test to show the examiner where this button is. It's your rear fog light.” @UncleBenders commented: “My friend failed her test for not being able to put the fog lights on when the examiner asked, so learn where they are guys!” Motorists can quickly differentiate between the front and rear fog lights by looking at the design.
The switch to activate the front lights will usually have the squiggle to the left of the lamp icon. Road users must be aware that this is swapped around for the rear fog lights with the lamp icon usually on the left. However, motorists should only switch on their fog lights when visibility dramatically worsens.
It is against the Highway Code to use fog lights when the weather is clear in the same way it is wrong for motorists to ignore the tool in bouts of bad weather. Car insurance specialists and breakdown experts at the RAC have revealed exactly when fog lights should be turned on. They stressed individuals could even be at risk of invalidating their car insurance policy if they get it wrong.
They explained: “Fog lights should only be used in the fog, when visibility drops below 100 metres (328 feet) which is roughly the length of a football pitch, this is stated by the Highway Code (rule 226). “Not using your fog lights when appropriate could impact upon the safety of yourself and those around you when driving. “If while driving in fog your car is involved in an accident and you weren't using your fog lights, it could invalidate your car insurance.
