Storm Nuria is set to unleash winds of up to 90km/h on the Canary Islands, with amber weather warnings in place due to "heavy rainfall and very strong winds". The weather alerts come into force on, Thursday, April 3, across all of the Canary Islands. The western islands of La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and Tenerife are expected to bear the brunt of the storm when it makes landfall.

Amber warnings for winds have been issued for La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera, where gusts could reach up to 90km/h. These wind speeds could also be experienced in areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Spain's national weather agency, Aemet, announced the impending storm on social media site X, stating: "Thursday will bring strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall in the Canary Islands.

"It will affect the Peninsula starting Thursday night, especially the western part of the peninsula, also with very strong winds and precipitation.", reports the Manchester Evening News . Coastal warnings for force 7 winds are also in place for the western islands. Aemet has even warned of 'hurricane-force winds' at Mount Teide. Aemet, the Spanish meteorological agency, has issued a forecast for Thursday, which says: "Initially, cloudy periods will predominate.

The passage of a cloudy band from west to east of the archipelago throughout the day will gradually turn skies cloudy to overcast, especially on the northern and western slopes of the westernmost islands, leaving light to moderate rain on these slopes, locally persistent. "Heavy rain could occur in the west and on the peaks of La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Elsewhere, light, scattered, and occasional rain is possible.

Minimum temperatures will show little change or will drop slightly. Maximum temperatures will generally rise, especially in Tenerife. "Moderate westerly winds will increase at all levels, with strong intervals in exposed areas, and very strong gusts on summits in the eastward-facing mid-mountains.

Occasional gusts of hurricane-force winds may also be possible on Mount Teide." The arrival of Storm Nuria coincides with the start of the Easter Holidays for many Brits, who are planning to fly to the Canaries this weekend. However, the weather is expected to improve by Friday, with no warnings currently in place.

Aemet said: "Generally cloudy, increasing on the eastern and northeastern slopes of the mountainous islands during the afternoon, to cloudy with occasional showers. "Light, scattered rain is not ruled out in the remaining areas and islands. Temperatures will remain unchanged or rise slightly.

Light westerly winds will be moderate in the midlands and strong in the peaks of Tenerife and La Palma, easing at midday.".
