Canal-based water supply: Work on reservoirs, pipelines starts

Ludhiana: Although work on construction of a water treatment plant to treat canal water before supplying it to city residents under the 24/7 canal-based water supply project is yet to start, authorities have started construction of overhead water reservoirs and installation of water pipelines. On Saturday, Punjab housing and urban development minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and mayor, Principal Inderjit Kaur initiated construction of two overhead water reservoirs and installation of an associated pipeline in the Bhamian area (ward number 22). While the overhead water reservoirs will be constructed at a cost of around Rs 7.

30 crore, the associated water supply pipeline will be installed at a cost of around Rs 40 crore. Work on the overhead water reservoirs was started with difficulty, as residents had frequently objected to their construction. Several meetings were held with councillors and residents of different areas to convince them of the need for the reservoirs to provide clean drinking water to the public.



Councillor Jaspal Singh Grewal, MC chief, engineer Ravinder Garg, executive engineer Parshotam Singh, PIU executive engineer Amarjeet Singh, AE Jarnail Singh, and Maninder Singh, communication specialist Jaspreet Singh, among others, were also present on the occasion. MC officials claimed that two overhead reservoirs, with a capacity of around 31.40 lakh litres, would be established in Trikona Park, Bhamian, and Ansal Enclave.

They added that overhead reservoirs were also being constructed in other areas of the city under the canal-based water supply project. Officials said that a world-class water treatment plant (WTP) would be constructed in Bilga village (near Sahnewal), from where treated surface water would be supplied to the city. The first phase of the canal-based water supply project is being undertaken at a cost of around Rs 1,300 crore (civil works).
