Crafted in Canada by a family-owned company — that’s one of the primary reasons that Calgary-based designer, Aly Velji of Alykhan Velji Designs chose to collaborate with Toronto-based Silva Furnishings for his fourth and most exciting customizable furniture line: the Modern Heritage Collection.
“This collection has been a labour of love and working with the Silva team has been amazing. Silva is a Canadian company that has been around for 45 years. They know upholstery.
They know furniture and they are Canadian, which is so important in this economy,” says Aly Velji. The collection launched in January at the Interior Design Show in Toronto and is comprised of 10 customizable furniture pieces. Furniture pieces in the collection include sofas, ottomans, dining chairs, accent chairs and bedframes with innovative headboards and all of the pieces are named after areas in London, U.
K. — the Mayfair ottoman, the Paddington footstool, the Kensington Chesterfield, the Soho bed to name a few. The goal was to embody British charm and old-world sophistication and heritage elements.
Pieces feature fringe details, rolled arms, pleating and exquisite detailing. “You can choose your fabric, your piping, your pleating details. Each piece is made-to-order exactly how you want it.
And, each piece is hand-made — there are at least 15 people that touch each piece. So, it’s bringing that heirloom quality back to design. These pieces will last for years and years and you can pass them down to your kids and your grandchildren,” says Velji.

“That’s how you make a space feel curated — by adding those layers. Over the past decade, design trends have skewed to a minimalist esthetic, and as designers, we are ready to bring richness back to our interiors,” says Velji. “By blending heritage forms with bold patterns, and adding luxurious finishes, we’ve created a collection that will bring that sophistication and detail back to design.
” Velji’s favourite pieces are the bedframes. “They are beautiful shapes — dynamic. The triangular shape of the Knightsbridge Bed takes its inspiration from castles.
I just wanted to do something different — put a twist on a regular bed frame,” says Velji. Another of his favourites is the Kensington Chesterfield with its tufted back and distinguished rolled arms. It’s available with a refined fringe, pleated embellishments, or beautifully turned wood legs.
