Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Donald Trump's tariffs have been postponed for a month after the two world leaders had a phone call on Monday. Trudeau made the announcement through the social media platform X. "I just had a good call with President Trump.
Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners , and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl," he wrote. "Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.
" "In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering," he added.
I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million. Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together. The statement is in stark contrast to the narrative that Trudeau was pushing over the weekend when he called for tariffs against American goods.
During his statement, Trudeau vowed to "not back down in standing up for Canadians" but said that both peoples would soon be feeling the consequences. "We don't want to be here. We didn't ask for this," he declared.
"The actions taken by the White House split us apart instead of bringing us together." Trudeau then urged Canadians to "choose Canadian products and services rather than American ones." The pause in the tariffs against Canada comes as Trump also paused his tariff against Mexico after allegedly talking with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
"I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico ," Trump wrote in the post. "It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States." "These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country," he added.
"We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one-month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico." Trump stated that he looked "forward to participating in those negotiations" alongside President Sheinbaum "as we attempt to achieve a 'deal' between our two Countries." The post comes after President Sheinbaum said that she planned to introduce her own tariff against the US.
President Sheinbaum had previously said she mandated her economic minister to enforce both tariff and non-tariff barriers to safeguard Mexican interests. The Mexican president strongly refuted allegations from the White House, stating, "We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations as well as any intention of meddling in our territory." President Sheinbaum further critiqued the U.
S.'s domestic policies, suggesting, "If the United States government and its agencies wanted to address the serious fentanyl consumption in their country, they could fight the sale of drugs on the streets of their major cities, which they don't do and the laundering of money that this illegal activity generates that has done so much harm to its population."
