The Triveni Community Centre in Brampton, Canada, has canceled an upcoming life certificate event by the Indian Consulate, originally scheduled for November 17, 2024, due to safety concerns about possible violent protests. This event was planned to assist Indian-origin residents in Canada with renewing essential documents. “Please be advised that the Life Certificate Event scheduled at Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024, has been canceled due to an extremely high and imminent threat of violent protests, as indicated by intelligence from Peel Regional Police,” announced the community center.
In its statement, the Triveni Community Centre urged Peel Police to address threats targeting the Brampton Triveni Mandir and to ensure the security of the Canadian Hindu community and the public. “We apologize to community members who depended on this event and are saddened by the current climate of fear around Hindu temples in Canada,” the center stated. The cancellation follows a November 3 incident, where a protest by Khalistan separatists at Brampton’s Hindu Sabha Temple turned violent, with physical altercations involving makeshift weapons.
Peel Regional Police responded to the scene. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah has requested that the Triveni Community Centre consider postponing the consular event to help ease tensions and ensure the safety of attendees..
