Mural magic: A painted pledge to save the planet Middle school students from Al Madina Schools in Morocco tapped into their artistic sides to create a mural for Call to Earth Day. Students sketched out a design before painting the colorful mural. Making recycled materials useful Students across Chile have been using recycled materials to add to their environments.
Students at Colegio Pumahue Temuco were challenged to create a piece of “land art” inspired by ancestral history – art made directly in the natural landscape. While students at Colegio Pumahue Curauma came together to make sculptures reminiscent of the Moai heads of Easter Island for a school exhibition. Others focused on supporting the wildlife around them.
Families from Colegio Pumahue Peñalolen worked together to build feeding troughs from recycled materials to help the local fauna. Students at Colegio Pumahue Puerto Montt created a birdhouse to provide shelter for the hummingbirds that visit the water fountains installed by the school. And students at the Colegio Manquecura Ciudad del Este in Puente Alto used eco-bricks (for instance, a water bottle densely packed with used plastic) and recycled tires to build medicinal gardens.
Garlands of sea life The 11th-Grade B Class from Instituto Educativo Olinca, in Mexico, created garlands with aluminum from recycled cans collected at the school, and applied an embossing technique, used in “traditional Mexican craftsmanship.” They chose the theme of marine wildlife, “as it is one of the ecosystems most vulnerable to climate change.” They also created this colorful artwork.
Cleaning up waterways These young people at Global Shapers Hyderabad, in India, collected 85 kilograms (187 pounds) of waste at Nallagandla Lake. They say they are “on a mission to reclaim our city’s lakes one cleanliness drive at a time!” A post shared by Global Shapers Hyderabad (@globalshapershyderabad).
