Ludhiana: Under pressure ahead of the municipal elections to expedite development projects and improve the city’s cleanliness, officials in civic body have been instructed now to file daily updates on work status and even take directions from the governing party’s legislators in these efforts. The urgency for action follows a recent meeting in Chandigarh attended by MLAs and the local bodies minister, where concerns were raised about the lack of basic amenities in the city. Sources indicate that officials are anxious about the potential fallout from the upcoming civic body polls, fearing repercussions if the ruling party fails to secure a majority.
The Supreme Court has mandated that local body elections be conducted in Punjab, allowing the state government to announce election dates at any time. In response, political parties have ramped up their activities, with leaders from the ruling party beginning to blame municipal officials for challenges related to the elections. To implement directives from Tuesday's meeting, Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal convened a meeting with his officials on Wednesday.
He instructed them to take photographs of cleanliness efforts in various wards and report these to constituency MLAs and ward in-charges. Additionally, officials were directed to keep MLAs informed about ongoing development work and the status of tenders and work orders. Since Dachalwal took charge of the MC, tensions have reportedly arisen between local MLAs and officials due to recent changes he has implemented.
