Donald Trump was sued yesterday by the governor of California in a bid to end the US president’s trade tariff chaos. Gavin Newsom, a long-standing adversary of Mr Trump, accused him of abusing his powers and financially harming California and the rest of the United States. The US leader has imposed 10% tariffs on all goods from overseas and even higher tariffs on countries he says have high barriers to US imports – some of which, including a 25% EU tariff, he has paused for 90 days.

In yesterday’s lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, Mr Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta, another Democrat, say the US president does not have the power to impose sweeping tariffs without the consent of Congress. U.S.

Mr Newsom and Mr Bonta are asking the court to stop border authorities from enforcing the tariffs. Mr Newsom said ‘no state is poised to lose more than the state of California’. Mr Trump already faces two anti-tariff lawsuits – one in New York by a business advocacy group and one in Florida by a small business owner.
