A cafe owner “never thought” she’d be nominated for an award five years after starting off making cakes during lockdown. Mad Betty’s Kitchen, on Tonge Moor Road, has been shortlisted for Bolton’s Best Sandwich Shop of 2025. Rebecca Martin, 35, from Bromley Cross took over the cafe two and a half years ago – but it’s been there for 7 years.
She said: “I started off doing afternoon teas during lockdown from home, and then decided to buy the cafe. Mad Betty's Kitchen has been nominated for Bolton's Best Sandwich Shop (Image: Newsquest) “I’ve just always loved cooking and baking so I decided to do that from home. “We’ve had our ups and downs with the prices of everything and just making sure we try to keep our prices down for all the customers.

uk The kitchen sells a range of foods with a breakfast and dinner menu, but Rebecca says the main draw remains the cakes. She said: “We do sell cakes more than anything else. “Everything is homemade, we’ve got brownies, cheesecake, sponge cake.
.. rocky road as well – a little bit of everything really.
” After taking over the cafe, Rebecca kept on Tracy Oldham, 46, from Deane who was working there already. Now, the two of them are the sole employees of Mad Betty’s Kitchen aside from Rebecca’s daughter who works on Saturdays. Rebecca said: “I think it’s just a really friendly place to be and locals like it because they get on with us.
