Bygones: Superior dump sickened children in 1925

News-Tribune, April 5, 1925 Parents have filed a petition with the Wisconsin Board of Health demanding that Superior be compelled to discontinue the use of its dump at Catlin Avenue and North Sixth Street, two blocks from one of the city's largest public schools. The petition claims there are six cases of contagious disease within two blocks of the dump, which is infested with rats. ADVERTISEMENT News-Tribune, April 5, 1955 Fire started by lightning destroyed a Duluthian's summer home in Silver Creek Township, which has no fire department.

The property's caretaker discovered the fire and called the Two Harbors Fire Department, which could not respond to the call because the fire was outside the city limits. News-Tribune, April 5, 1975 Federal and state officials are investigating reports of health hazards among grain workers in the Twin Ports. They are looking into the effects of exposure to pesticides, chemical fumigants and grain dust among those who handle grain at the port.
