The majority of the funds, $157,500, will go toward land purchase and the remaining $15,000 for a new survey, which is a requirement of the grant.

The feature of the farm that made this project attractive for the grant is River Run Farm’s pristine riparian buffer along the the Housatonic River oxbow which spans over 3,000 feet and is home to over 75 species of birds. Great Barrington Land Conservancy, Hoffman Bird Club, and Berkshire Bird Observatory have identified the site as rich and pristine bird habitat and ideal for birding. In his first two-hour walk, Ben Nickley of the Berkshire Bird Observatory identified 53 birds, leading him to estimate there are dozens of more bird species either making permanent home on the site, or visiting it annually during migration.

The link to the list from the initial exploration can be found online . The grant announcement came just as Farmsteads for Farmers kicked off the Final Acre Campaign for the funds needed to close on the property. As a result of the Conservation Partnership grant from the state, the earlier Community Preservation Act grant from the Town of Great Barrington, and recent donations from individuals, Berkshire Community Land Trust has raised all but $185,000 to place River Run Farm into permanent community trusteeship.

Donations can be made online or by sending a check to Berkshire Community Land Trust, P.O. Box 276, Great Barrington, MA, 01230 with “River Run” written in the subject line.
