The reveal of Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon has been divisive to say the least. While many claim that the game is Bungie’s replacement for Destiny, the studio is adamant that the new shooter is for a different type of gamer than the majority of Destiny 2's sadly dwindling player base.In an interview with GamesRadar, game director Joe Ziegler explained that Marathon is not intended to replace Destiny.
Instead, the new extraction shooter is designed to sit alongside it while Bungie continues to give the game “a future.”Marathon won’t kill Destiny 2Ziegler explained that the goal of Marathon isn’t to become a new successor to Destiny, which is admittedly largely focussed on PvE gameplay. Instead, this entirely PvP experience will simply be a new option for fans of the studio.
“Part of it is we don't expect Marathon to become Destiny 3,” they said. “Our goal is not to basically make a new product that replaces Destiny 2. We believe that Destiny 2 has a future, and the team working on it has been working really hard to understand what players' needs are.
But if you like Destiny, and you happen to like a lot of PvP sandbox experiences, and those are other games that you play, then we think that that Marathon could be something very exciting for you.""If you are only looking for PvE experiences, definitely Marathon is not the game for you."MARATHON GAME DIRECTOR JOE ZIEGLER While Ziegler explained that the “weapons systems tend to be a little bit similar” between the two games, they also explained that not all Destiny 2 players will like Marathon.
After all, Destiny 2 PvP is not the most popular aspect of that game for a reason, and Bungie’s new title is all in on PvP.“I think if you are only looking for PvE experiences, definitely Marathon is not the game for you,” Ziegler said, “We are very comfortable saying, yeah, this isn't a game for everybody. This is a game for: if you like PvP experiences, especially in sandbox spaces, then this is probably something you're gonna enjoy.

However, with the future of Destiny 2 looking pretty dire, maybe it’s time to give fans some real hope for Destiny 3 or at least its real replacement..
