Winston-Salem got its first Barberitos restaurant Nov. 14 when franchisee Maggie Kendrick opened a location at 2251 Cloverdale Ave. in Cloverdale Plaza – a space occupied for many years by Cloverdale Kitchen.

Barberitos already has two locations in High Point and one each in Greensboro and Kernersville. (A second Greensboro location, on Spring Garden Street, recently closed.) The final N.

C. location is in Asheville. The chain has 43 locations total, spread over North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida and Alabama.

Kendrick is new to the Triad but not to Barberitos. She ran a Barberitos franchise in Kingsport, Tenn., for 10 years, before a job opportunity for her husband, Shannon, brought the family to North Carolina.

In opening in Winston-Salem, Kendrick persuaded longtime employee Chris Elliott to move from Kingsport to be her operating partner here. People are also reading..

“We keep it as real as our ingredients. ..

.,” Kendrick said. “We literally make everything from scratch.

The only thing that comes out of a bag is our tortillas.” The restaurant doesn’t have a set menu. Everything is customizable – it’s all build-your-own.

Customers can choose from burritos, burritos bowls, nachos, tacos, quesadillas and salads. They then choose a protein: ground beef, ground turkey, chicken, spicy chicken, steak, tofu, vegetarian and on Fridays only, jerk fish. All items are priced based on the protein, starting at $10.

39 for the tofu or vegetarian entrees and going up to $12.89 for steak. From there, customers can simply walk down the line of the open kitchen picking out whatever fillings they want.

Kendrick said the restaurant has about 30 different choices. All but four are included for a set price. The only add-ons with an upcharge ($1.

89 to $2.29) are avocado, guacamole, bacon and cheese dip. Choices include rice, pinto or black beans, cheese, spinach, lettuce, fresh or pickled jalapenos, olives, sour cream, corn salsa and chipotle ranch sauce.

Free chips and salsa come with every entrée, and the dining room has three different salsas to choose from. The restaurant has Tractor brand organic beverages – with such flavors as peach and strawberry dragon fruit – and Coca-Cola products. The Winston-Salem Barberitos is larger than most locations.

It can seat 104. It also has two digital kiosks to save time ordering. But they are optional for anyone who wants to walk down the line and pick their ingredients as they go.
