Buffalo moves up again in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Places to Retire list

Buffalo ranked above Rochester, Syracuse and Albany.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Five years ago, Buffalo wasn’t even among the top 100 in the U.

S. News & World Report’s annual Best Places to Retire list . Now, we’re in the top 50.



In the latest rankings, the Queen City came in at No. 42, a jump from No. 59 in the 2024-25 list .

Prior to that, Buffalo was 75th and 99th in the 2023-24 and 2022-23 lists, respectively. The study evaluates how the top 150 U.S.

cities meet Americans’ expectations when it comes to retirement. Scores are given based on indexes like affordability, happiness, retiree taxes, job market and health care quality. Read more from our partners at Buffalo Business First here .
