AUSTIN, Texas — The most popular beaver in Texas is heading back to court, suing yet another Buc-ee's copycat. The Texas-based convenience store chain has filed a lawsuit against Barc-ee's, a local coffee and food shop in Marshfield, Missouri. Unlike other Buc-ee's copycats, Barc-ee's is not a chain and isn't a place that has gas pumps.
Regardless, Buc-ee's is claiming that the name and logo of the company resemble the Buc-ee's trademarked beaver too closely. “By using the Barc-ee’s Logo — a colorable imitation of the Buc-ee’s Logo — Defendants have violated Buc-ee’s Trademarks,” the lawsuit says. “[Barc-ee’s] actions regarding use of Barc-ee’s Logo have all been without authorization of Buc-ee’s.
” Buc-ee's is no stranger to bringing so-called copycats to court. In January, the convenience store giant brought a lawsuit against North Texas gas station chain Super Fuels , alleging that the chain's logo — an anthropomorphic dog with a cape — too closely resembled the iconic Buc-ee's beaver. Similarly, a number of Buc-ee's knockoffs have popped up around Mexico in recent years.
In 2023, a video showing a store called "Buk-II's – Supermercado" in Matamoros went viral online, with the station's mascot not being a beaver but rather a mulleted gopher . Last December, another store eerily similar to Buc-ee's popped up in Tamaulipas , called ""LUC-KY's"." The logo for "LUC-KY's" features a raccoon as its mascot as opposed to the iconic beaver.
