” Brandon University professor Aloysius Anyichie is a finalist for the 2025 Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards. Anyichie says the recognition is not just about him but about the students he teaches, the community he belongs to and the people who have supported him all along. (File) Anyichie’s work in education, social justice, and community services has transformed lives across the country, the university stated in a press release issued Saturday.

“As an associate professor at Brandon University, his research focusing on supporting culturally diverse students’ engagement, motivation, and self-regulated learning is influencing teaching practices,” it read. “He is the founder of the Loy Excellentia Initiative, a mentorship program that supports African/Black students and professionals across Canada. His dedication to inclusion, social justice, equity, and academic excellence has earned him numerous national and international awards.

” Regarding what could have contributed to his nomination, Anyichie explained it was likely “a combination of community involvement, dedication to education and a passion for building bridges across cultures.” According to him, throughout his journey, he had focused on “creating spaces where newcomers feel valued and supported,” and had always tried to amplify “the voices and stories of immigrants.” Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett also voiced his enthusiasm for Anyichie’s achievement.

“(Aloysius) has done lots of work,” he told the Sun. “He recently released a new book at the university and had been involved in extensive advocacy, both within the university and the wider community.” Looking ahead, Anyichie added he remains grounded in his mission to uplift others.

“This recognition energizes me to keep going,” he said. “There’s still so much work to do, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing to my community and to Canada.” The Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards, presented by Canadian Immigrant magazine, honours immigrants from all walks of life who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and leadership in their fields and communities.

Finalists are selected through a combination of public nominations and a panel of judges, followed by a nationwide voting process. Voting is now open to the public, giving Canadians the opportunity to support Dr. Anyichie and other finalists as they vie for a spot in the Top 25.
