BSNL to strengthen India’s ambitious 5G roll-out: Scindia

Scindia added that out of the 1,00,000 BSNL 4G sites planned to be set-up by mid-2025, many will also be graduated to 5G connectivity.

(ANI Photo/Ritik Jain) NEW DELHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ) will soon deploy fifth-generation (5G) services, and India has conducted successful trials of the homegrown 5G radio access network (RAN) and Core in the 3.6GHz and 700MHz bands, said union minister of communications on Tuesday.

We have conducted successful trials of Indigenous 5G RAN and Core in both 3.6 GHz and 700 MHz bands and India will soon deploy indigenous 5G services,” said Jyotiraditya Scindia , Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, according to a Ministry of Communications statement.



Scindia added that out of the 1,00,000 BSNL 4G sites planned to be set-up by mid-2025, many will also be graduated to 5G connectivity. Scindia spoke at the launch of the government-owned telco’s new logo, and the roll-out of seven new services in the national capital on Tuesday. These new BSNL services include a spam-free network, national Wi-Fi roaming, fiber-based intranet TV, Any Time SIM (ATS) Kiosks, direct-to-device service, ‘Public Protection & Disaster Relief’ as a solution, and the first private 5G for mines in partnership with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

These seven indigenous services will always keep BSNL at the forefront of technological innovations in India, the minister said. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communication and Rural Development, said BSNL has stood as the nation’s backbone, providing telecom services in remote, challenging terrains. Advt He said BSNL has “unwavering government support” and has received revival packages in the past.

“BSNL is deploying fully indigenous 4G equipment showing the capability of technological advancement. BSNL has skilled manpower and has a nationwide reach,” Sekhar said. He said that the unveiling of a new logo will bring a refreshed identity for BSNL and, shows the intent of BSNL for “readiness to transform and innovate”.

India’s indigenous 4G and 5G stack – built by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), and a consortium led by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) – is being deployed for BSNL’s 4G network, which will be upgradeable to 5G in the future. ETTelecom, in its October 22, 2024 edition, reported that TCS along with Tejas Networks have commissioned 39,000 4G sites for BSNL, and a full-scale roll out is expected by March 2025. “We have installed about 49,000 sites.

The next step is commissioning, and currently, we have commissioned approximately 38,000 to 39,000 sites. The pace at which we are moving allows us to install about 450 to 500 sites every day, commission 400 to 500 sites daily, and optimize around 1,000 sites each day,” N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Advisor, Telecom Strategic Initiatives at TCS & Chairman, Tejas Networks, told ETTelecom in an interview recently .
