Pune: A week after deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar ordered the removal of the BRTS railings on Pune-Ahmednagar Road , Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Saturday night cleared them between Somnathnagar Chowk and Kharadi bypass junction. The unused BRTS had caused several accidents and created obstacles in the free flow of traffic during peak hours. The route is approximately 3km and PMC dismantled the railings in the first phase.
Chandannagar resident Nelson Fernandes said, "It took so many years for PMC to take action against an unused facility. It waited for so many accidents, both fatal and major injuries, before finally removing the obstruction. Better sense has prevailed and the road will now be free of obstacles.
" The remaining portion of the BRTS route will be removed in the next phase municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale said. He added, "The BRTS's dismantling will be conducted in phases. There are some traffic changes being implemented on Nagar Road, so we need to take it one at a time so that commuters do not get confused by sudden changes.
" Pawar also ordered that the proposed two-tier flyover that will be constructed by National Highway Authority between Shirur and Wagholi should be extended to Phoenix Mall in Vimannagar instead of ending at Wagholi. Kharadi resident Neha Ganesan said, "The speed of vehicles will increase. Traffic police should ensure that this does not cause accidents, and precautionary measures should be undertaken.
The removal of the BRTS is a relief."
