Two years ago, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) handed out the nominations for films released in 2021, with one notable snub being Denis Villeneuve for best director on the first “Dune”. Actor Josh Brolin, who portrays Gurney Halleck in the films, is still upset about that and has given an ultimatum. Speaking with , he says this week: “If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting.

” Back in 2022, Villeneuve lost out a nomination with Kenneth Branagh, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and winner Jane Campion taking the slots. This time, Villeneuve is up for “Dune: Part Two” which scored better reviews than the first film and is expected to be a major awards player – especially in a year like this when little on the Fall film circuit offered much in the way of a challenge. Brolin, who called the director’s snub for the first film “f–king totally dumb,” continues saying: “It was a better movie than the first one.

When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.

” Though Sean Baker seems a lock for “Anora,” many of the other slots are up for grabs with the likes of Edward Berger (“Conclave”), Jon M. Chu (“Wicked”), Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Perez”) and Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) likely to be competing..
