The National Broadcasting Corporation in Bougainville commissioned major infrastructure upgrades at its local regional station in Buka yesterday. The NBC is advancing its broadcast service to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville with the commissioning of a 50 meter transmission tower including a 2 kilowatt FM transmitter, a 60 Kilowatt generator and a four door Toyota Landcruiser. The Bougainville NBC Office after 30 years following the Bougainville Crisis is now seeing an advance to its broadcast services to reach further into all regions of Bougainville.

The NBC received funding from the Marape/Rosso Government to enable it to commence upgrading of infrastructure since last year, and replacing the old tower with a new 50 meter tower to boost its signals further across the region. The commissioning of major infrastructure upgrades at the local station also features a 2-kilowatt FM transmitter and other renovation work in the studio. The National Minister for Information Communication and Technology, Timothy Masiu, NBC’s Managing Director, Kora Nou, and senior executives of the national broadcaster are in the region to officially commission the new infrastructure, including a vehicle.

The Member for North Bougainville Francisca Semoso was also present to witness the occasion with Chief Secretary Kearnneth Nanei and ABG Minister for Police John Bosco Ragu and DPI Minister Geraldine Paul were among dignitaries from the Autonomous Bougainville Government. The renovations and upgrade at NBC Bougainville now enable its signal to cover the entire Buka Island, surrounding islands around Buka, Nissan Island and most parts of North Bougainville on the east coast right down to the land border with Central Bougainville at Tinputz. There are further improvements to NBC’s service which will extend to South Bougainville with building of a medium wave transmitter.

Other developments are also planned for Central Bougainville to ensure the NBC broadcast signals cover the entire region and beyond..
